A WILDERNESS HIKE TO TRAPPER LAKE IN THE SKY LAKES
Details
Our LAST sundays hike to the summit of Pelican Butte was a total success with 100 % of the hikers reaching the summit. It was a grueling 9 miles with a 2000 ft up hill and downhill climb.
This hike is a step down from our last hike. It starts at the cold springs trail head in the sky lakes wilderness and heads north on south rock creek trail for 2.5 miles to the heavenly twins lakes for a break.
From there we continue north on the snow lake trail for 2.3 miles to the shores of Trapper lake our destination. We will take a one hour lunch break before heading back to our trail head on the same trails. Hikers who would like to see more lakes during our lunch our can hoof it to Margurette lake a .5 mile one way distance from trapper lake.
Please note that this hike does not have the vertical climb that Pelican butte hike has.
There is a 360 ft up and down on the hike to Trapper Lake .
Our weather outlook for this Sunday looks fantastic. It may be the best day of the week for a hike. High pressure will give us light winds lots of sunshine and temperatures in the mid 60 s. Mosquitos that hang around the lakes may be very few since the night temperatures drop into the low 30s.
Do bring on this hike a good protein lunch . You may not need to bring a lot of water since some hikers have water filters. There are numerous lakes on our hike that will give us a chance to taste their mountain water.
I strongly suggest that you do bring good hiking boots, hiking poles, gloves, long sleeve shirt, long pants, a hat plus sunglasses and sunscreen.
We will meet at MOORE park marina at 8 30 AM for carpooling. It is a 35 mile drive to our meet up. We drive west on Rt 140 to mile post 41 where we turn right going north to the cold springs trailhead. This road is in good condition for the 10.3 mile trip. There are several small and large potholes on the road so keep your eye out for them if you are a driver. There is no snow but do expect averaging 20 mph. There is no need for a 4WD but a little high clearance would be nice. There is a large parking area at the trail head with rest rooms.
I do think that our arrival time at our trail head will be close to 9 40 AM. Allowing a few minutes to get ready we should be hitting the trail by 9 50 AM. Going at my 82 year old pace and with a 10 min break at the heavenly twins we should arrive at Trapper lake about 12 15 pm , just about lunch time. Plan on starting your return about 1 15 pm and being back at our trail head by 3 30 pm and back to our meet up by 4 30 pm.
Dogs are welcome on this hike but need to be on a leash.
