Risky Business (1981) Lets have a bit of comedy for our Memorial Day Weekend and kick off with some Blockbusters for a Losers Summer. We all have our favorite coming of age movie. We all have our own reasons for loving our choice. This is mine. Come armed with your favorite.

Three years in, here at the Losers, we are definitely overdue a Terrence Malick movie. Badlands (1973), his first, is also my favorite. This is the film that introduced the distinctive voice of Terrence Malick to the cinema world. Badlands (1973) is a movie that transformed the true crime story into a haunting meditation on innocence, violence, and the American landscape. It also introduced me to Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen.

If you have not already, this is definitely one that should be on everyone's seen it list.

Coming off a string of pretty heavy movies I thought we should mix it up a bit. Karl presented Risky Business a couple of weeks ago as his coming of age selection and though this isn't a formal face-off, he very much encouraged me to show mine. This week we're discussing the lightning in a bottle indie that made waves at Sundance, Napoleon Dynamite (2004). I'm not ashamed to say that I love this movie. I loved it the first time I saw it and love it more today. It remains endlessly quotable and ever re-watchable. While not the heaviest of subject matter, there are lots of themes and plenty of 2004 things to discuss. I'm still grappling with the fact that this movie is over 20 years old. Good thing it still holds up! We don't discuss many comedies in this club, surprisingly they're one of the more polarizing genres. As Karl once told me, comedy is very particular to the viewer...I always thought everyone found the same things funny that I did...apparently not. Napoleon Dynamite however is one of the rare comedies that Karl and I both agree on. Grab your tots and a que-suh-dill-uh and join us as we break this one down.

They just don't make 'em like this anymore. This week we're discussing Thelma & Louise (1991). Here's the one line summary for this film on IMDb: "An Arkansas waitress and a housewife shoot a rapist and take off in a '66 Thunderbird." What more could you want??? I'll tell you what. Ridley Scott's direction, a killer (no pun intended) soundtrack, the gorgeous landscapes of the American West, Geena, Susan, Harvey, the late, great Michael Madsen, Shooter McGavin himself and an absolutely swoon-worthy Brad Pitt in one of his very first film roles.

This is my Americana road trip film companion piece to complement Karl's 'Badlands' presentation from a couple of weeks ago. Both excellent films with plenty to compare and contrast and both are responsible for launching the careers of some of the biggest stars of our time.
