JAPAN MADE, the company’s cultural project, will host an art event titled “AWAI – Between Light and Shadow” on December 13 (Sat) and 14 (Sun), 2025, in collaboration with the long-established Kyoto lantern workshop Kojima Shoten.
About the Exhibition
Under the theme “Reading JAPAN MADE through the Five Senses,” this exhibition reinterprets the spirit and beauty that live within Japanese craftsmanship through a contemporary lens. It presents a new experiential format that allows visitors to feel the true value of Japan’s artisanal culture.
Welcoming Kojima Shoten, founded in 1789, the event introduces the refined light techniques of Kyoto lantern-making and the philosophy of the artisans who have preserved this craft for generations.

Workshop Programs
Two hands-on workshops by artisans from Kojima Shoten will be held during the exhibition.
Participants can directly experience parts of the Kyoto chōchin (lantern)-making process that has been passed down for over 200 years.
- Washi-Paper Application Workshop
Experience how a lantern takes shape as you apply washi paper onto bamboo ribs.
Together with the artisans, participants will learn the delicate process of gluing each split bamboo and layering the paper piece by piece.
Fee: ¥45,000 (tax included)
Sessions: 11:00 / 14:00 / 16:00 (tentative, each day)
2. Hand-Painting Workshop
Decorate a finished lantern under the guidance of master artisans.
Using a traditional brush, paint characters or patterns while sensing the subtle expressions created through breathing and brush pressure.
Participants will complete and take home a one-of-a-kind lantern.
Fee: ¥10,000 (tax included)
Sessions: 12:00 / 15:00 (tentative, each day)
These two special days offer a rare opportunity to craft a unique lantern alongside artisans who have honed their skills over generations.

About Kojima Shoten
Founded in 1789 during the Edo (Kansei) era, Kojima Shoten is a long-established lantern workshop based in Kyoto.
The studio continues to uphold the traditional “jibari-shiki” method, in which every step—from splitting bamboo to assembling frames and applying paper—is done entirely by hand. By binding each bamboo ring individually with hemp thread, the workshop achieves both strength and a soft, organic texture.
Their rugged yet elegant “Kojima-style lanterns” stand as a symbol of craftsmanship passed down through the ages.
While rooted in Edo-period techniques, Kojima Shoten continues to explore new relationships between materials, form, space, and light—creating luminous landscapes that resonate in the modern world.

JAPAN MADE is a project by HYAKUHACHI Inc. built on the concept of “Kyōsoku – Breathing Together.”

Workshop Terms & Conditions
Please read and agree to the following terms before making your reservation.
By confirming your booking, you are deemed to have understood and agreed to all of the following.
(1)Liability and Responsibility
I understand that any injuries, allergic reactions, property damage, or other losses occurring before, during, or after the workshop are my own responsibility. I agree not to hold the organizer liable or make any claims for damages or compensation.
(2)Cancellations by Participants
In the event of cancellation due to personal reasons after registration, I agree not to request any refund or reduction of the workshop fee.
(3)Payment Method
Workshop fees must be paid in advance. If advance payment is not possible, payment by credit card or cash will be accepted on the day of the workshop.
(4)Arrival Time
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Participants arriving more than 15 minutes late may be considered as same-day cancellations.
(5)Changes and Cancellations
Reservations may be changed or canceled free of charge up to three days (72 hours) before the workshop date.
Cancellations made two days or one day before the workshop will incur an 80% cancellation fee, and same-day cancellations will incur a 100% fee. However, if you rebook for a new date, 50% of the same-day cancellation fee will be refunded.
(6)Multiple Bookings
Holding multiple reservation slots under the same name is prohibited. If duplicate bookings are detected, both reservations may be canceled without prior notice.
By making a reservation for this workshop, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to all of the above terms and conditions.

株式会社ひゃくはち（本社：東京都世田谷区、代表：畠山純）が運営する「JAPAN MADE」は、2025年12月13日（土）・14日（日）、京都の老舗提灯工房「小嶋商店」と共に、アートイベント【AWAI - あわい -】を開催します。

◯ワークショッププログラム
本展では、小嶋商店の職人による2種類のワークショップを開催。
どちらも200年以上受け継がれてきた京提灯づくりの一端を、実際の手仕事を通じて体験することができます。
和紙貼り体験
竹骨に和紙を貼り、提灯が形を成していく過程を体感。
割り竹に糊を打ち、一枚ずつ張り合わせる繊細な工程を職人とともに学びます。
参加費：45,000円（税込）
開催時間：（例）各日 11:00〜／14:00〜／16:00〜（予定）
絵付け体験
職人の指導のもと、完成した提灯に自由に絵付けを行います。
毛筆で文字や文様を描きながら、呼吸や筆圧の違いが生み出す繊細な表現を体感。
世界に一つだけの提灯を仕上げて持ち帰ることができます。
参加費：10,000円（税込）
開催時間：（例）各日 12:00〜／15:00〜（予定）
何世代にもわたり技を磨いてきた職人の手ほどきを受けながら、世界に一つだけの提灯をつくることができる特別な2日間です。

◾️小嶋商店について
創業1789年、江戸寛政年間に京都で誕生した老舗提灯工房。
以来、竹割から骨組み、紙貼りまで一貫して手作業で行う「地張り式」製法を守り続け、独立した竹骨を一本ずつ輪にして麻糸でまつることで、強度と柔らかな風合いを両立しています。その無骨で頑丈な「小嶋式提灯」は、時代を越えて受け継がれる職人技の象徴。
江戸時代から伝わる伝統技法を基盤に、素材やフォルム、空間と提灯との新たな関係性を探求し、現代に息づく光の景色を生み出しています。

(4)ワークショップ開始時刻の15分前にお越しください。15分以上遅刻された場合は当日キャンセルとさせていただく場合がございます。
(5)ワークショップ当日の3日（72時間)前まででしたら、ご予約の変更・キャンセルは無料です。それ以降のご予約の変更・キャンセルにつきましては、前日及び2日前は80%、当日は100%のキャンセル料が発生します。なお新たな日時にご予約いただきましたお客様には、ワークショップ当日キャンセル料の50%を返金いたします。
(6)予約枠を複数確保されるのは原則禁止とさせていいただきます。複数の予約が発覚した場合は予告なく両方の予約を取り消させていただきます。
