“JAPAN MADE” will host the art event [Awai - あわい -] in collaboration with Kyoto’s long-established lantern workshop Kojima Shoten on December 13 (Sat) and 14 (Sun), 2025.
The theme of this exhibition is “Sensing JAPAN MADE with All Five Senses.”
It reinterprets the spirit and beauty that live within Japanese craftsmanship through a contemporary lens, presenting a new form of exhibition where visitors can experience the true value of Japanese making.
For this first edition, we welcome Kojima Shoten, founded in 1789, to showcase the inherited techniques of Kyoto lanterns and the artisans’ devotion behind them—expressed through photography, film, writing, and hands-on experience.

◾️Background

Since its founding in 2016, JAPAN MADE has been working alongside artisans and workshops throughout Japan under the belief that “Japanese craftsmanship should be sustainable.”
Through these efforts, various challenges have come to light—such as the shortage of successors, the depletion of raw materials and tools, and the shrinking of distribution channels—all of which threaten the continuity of traditional making.
Until now, JAPAN MADE has focused on creating opportunities for people to learn about craftsmanship through media.
The next phase aims to go further—to create opportunities for people to truly experience it.
The first step in this new endeavor is the exhibition [Awai - あわい -].

◾️About “Awai”

To us, “Awai” represents the subtle in-between—
between material and technique, between humans and nature, between tradition and the present.
It is the delicate fluctuation and quiet space that arise in those connections.
In this exhibition, with the participation of Kyoto’s long-established lantern workshop Kojima Shoten, we will explore over two centuries of inherited skills and the beauty of handcraft through light and shadow, sound and texture, offering a multi-sensory encounter with Japanese craftsmanship.

◾️Workshop Programs

During the exhibition, two types of hands-on workshops will be conducted by the artisans of Kojima Shoten.
Participants will have the rare opportunity to experience the essence of Kyoto lantern-making—a craft passed down for over 200 years—through actual handwork guided by master artisans.

1. Washi Paper Application Workshop

Experience the process of forming a lantern by carefully applying washi paper onto bamboo ribs.
Under the guidance of artisans, participants will learn the delicate steps of brushing glue onto split bamboo and layering sheets of washi one by one to bring the lantern to life.
Participation Fee: ¥45,000 (tax included)
Schedule:
Day 1: 1:00 PM / 5:00 PM (2 sessions, 5 participants per session)
Day 2: 11:00 AM / 4:00 PM (2 sessions, 5 participants per session)

2. Painting Workshop

Under the supervision of a skilled artisan, participants will freely decorate completed lanterns with calligraphy or patterns using traditional brushes.
Through this process, they will experience the subtle nuances created by breath and brush pressure—and complete a one-of-a-kind lantern to take home.
Participation Fee: ¥12,000 (tax included)
Schedule:
Day 1: 3:30 PM / 5:30 PM (2 sessions, 6 participants per session)
Day 2: 2:00 PM / 5:00 PM (2 sessions, 6 participants per session)

Over these two special days, guests will have the rare opportunity to craft their very own lanterns under the personal guidance of artisans who have refined their skills over generations.

In addition to the workshops, visitors can also explore an interactive media exhibition featuring photographs, films, and written stories that reveal the artistry and process behind Kyoto lantern-making.

◾️About Kojima Shoten

Founded in 1789 during the Edo (Kansei) era, Kojima Shoten is a long-established lantern workshop based in Kyoto.
The studio continues to uphold the traditional “jibari-shiki” method, in which every step—from splitting bamboo to assembling frames and applying paper—is done entirely by hand. By binding each bamboo ring individually with hemp thread, the workshop achieves both strength and a soft, organic texture.
Their rugged yet elegant “Kojima-style lanterns” stand as a symbol of craftsmanship passed down through the ages.
While rooted in Edo-period techniques, Kojima Shoten continues to explore new relationships between materials, form, space, and light—creating luminous landscapes that resonate in the modern world.

JAPAN MADE is a project by HYAKUHACHI Inc. built on the concept of “Kyōsoku – Breathing Together.”
It aims to make Japanese craftsmanship sustainable by recognizing it as a culture born from the dialogue and harmony between nature’s blessings and the human spirit and technique nurtured within it.

Workshop Terms & Conditions

Please read and agree to the following terms before making your reservation.
By confirming your booking, you are deemed to have understood and agreed to all of the following.
(1)Liability and Responsibility
I understand that any injuries, allergic reactions, property damage, or other losses occurring before, during, or after the workshop are my own responsibility. I agree not to hold the organizer liable or make any claims for damages or compensation.

(2)Cancellations by Participants
In the event of cancellation due to personal reasons after registration, I agree not to request any refund or reduction of the workshop fee.

(3)Payment Method
Workshop fees must be paid in advance. If advance payment is not possible, payment by credit card or cash will be accepted on the day of the workshop.

(4)Arrival Time
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Participants arriving more than 15 minutes late may be considered as same-day cancellations.

(5)Changes and Cancellations
Reservations may be changed or canceled free of charge up to three days (72 hours) before the workshop date.
Cancellations made two days or one day before the workshop will incur an 80% cancellation fee, and same-day cancellations will incur a 100% fee. However, if you rebook for a new date, 50% of the same-day cancellation fee will be refunded.

(6)Multiple Bookings
Holding multiple reservation slots under the same name is prohibited. If duplicate bookings are detected, both reservations may be canceled without prior notice.

By making a reservation for this workshop, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to all of the above terms and conditions.

株式会社ひゃくはち（本社：東京都世田谷区、代表：畠山純）が運営する「JAPAN MADE」は、2025年12月13日（土）・14日（日）、京都の老舗提灯工房「小嶋商店」と共に、アートイベント【Awai - あわい -】を開催します。
本展は、“五感で読むJAPAN MADE”をテーマに、日本のモノづくりに息づく精神と美を、現代の文脈で捉え直し、日本のモノづくりの価値を体感できる新しい形の展示です。記念すべき第一回は、創業1789年の小嶋商店を迎え、京提灯に受け継がれる技と、その背景にある職人の魂を、写真・映像・文章、そして体験という形でお届けします。

◾️開催の背景
2016年の発足以来、JAPAN MADEは「日本のモノづくりを持続可能に」という思いのもと、全国の職人や工房と共に活動を続けてきました。その過程で浮かび上がったのは、後継者不足や原材料・道具の枯渇、販路の縮小といった、モノづくりを持続させるための課題です。
これまでJAPAN MADEは、メディアを通じて「知ってもらう機会」を届けてきました。次のフェーズでは、その先にある「体感してもらう機会」をつくることを目指しています。その第一弾として開催するのが、本展【Awai - あわい -】です。
私たちが考える“あわい”とは、素材と技、人と自然、伝統と現代——その間に生まれる微細なゆらぎや余白のこと。今回は、京都の老舗提灯工房「小嶋商店」を迎え、200年を超える技の継承と手仕事の美を、光と影、音や手触りを通して多角的に紹介します。

◾️ワークショッププログラム
本展では、小嶋商店の職人による2種類のワークショップを開催。
どちらも200年以上受け継がれてきた京提灯づくりの一端を、実際の手仕事を通じて体験することができます。
和紙貼り体験
竹骨に和紙を貼り、提灯が形を成していく過程を体感。
割り竹に糊を打ち、一枚ずつ張り合わせる繊細な工程を職人とともに学びます。
参加費：45,000円（税込）
開催時間：1日目13時〜、17時〜（全2回各回5名限定）
2日目11時〜、16時〜（全2回各回5名限定）
絵付け体験
職人の指導のもと、完成した提灯に自由に絵付けを行います。
毛筆で文字や文様を描きながら、呼吸や筆圧の違いが生み出す繊細な表現を体感。
世界に一つだけの提灯を仕上げて持ち帰ることができます。
参加費：12,000円（税込）
開催時間：1日目15時30分〜、17時30分〜（全2回各回6名限定）
2日目14時〜、17時〜（全2回各回6名限定）

何世代にもわたり技を磨いてきた職人の手ほどきを受けながら、世界に一つだけの提灯をつくることができる特別な2日間です。

◾️小嶋商店について
創業1789年、江戸寛政年間に京都で誕生した老舗提灯工房。
以来、竹割から骨組み、紙貼りまで一貫して手作業で行う「地張り式」製法を守り続け、独立した竹骨を一本ずつ輪にして麻糸でまつることで、強度と柔らかな風合いを両立しています。その無骨で頑丈な「京提灯」は、時代を越えて受け継がれる職人技の象徴。
江戸時代から伝わる伝統技法を基盤に、素材やフォルム、空間と提灯との新たな関係性を探求し、現代に息づく光の景色を生み出しています。

(4)ワークショップ開始時刻の15分前にお越しください。15分以上遅刻された場合は当日キャンセルとさせていただく場合がございます。
(5)ワークショップ当日の3日（72時間)前まででしたら、ご予約の変更・キャンセルは無料です。それ以降のご予約の変更・キャンセルにつきましては、前日及び2日前は80%、当日は100%のキャンセル料が発生します。なお新たな日時にご予約いただきましたお客様には、ワークショップ当日キャンセル料の50%を返金いたします。
