The year 2011 was a turning point for Korean literature abroad with the release of the critically acclaimed bestselling novel Please Look After Mom by Kyung-sook Shin. Dr. Fulton will discuss the positive impact of Shin’s widely translated novel, which opened the door for many other talented Korean writers. Dr. Fulton will examine the latest trends in Korean literature translation and its continuing influence on American society.

Dr. Bruce Fulton is Associate Professor and Young-Bin Min Chair in Korean Literature and Literary Translation at the University of British Columbia, where he teaches premodern and modern Korean-to-English literary translation. Fulton is an experienced translator of contemporary Korean fiction, for which he received a translation award from the Daesan Foundation in 2009. His research interests include modern Korean fiction, narrative technique in the short fiction of Hwang Sun-wŏn, and non-mainstream Korean literature, such as women's literature, military camptown fiction, and the literature of the Korean diaspora.
