Talk by Volkert: Testing Kotlin with Kotlin

Abstract: Writing tests! We all know that test coverage is important, but writing unit tests is often a far-from-fun experience, in many cases due to limitations of the test libraries and frameworks that we are used to using. Many of us are accustomed to using Java-specific libraries, and although they do a decent job of testing most Kotlin code, there are Kotlin-specific alternatives that are a much better fit. In this talk, the advantages and strengths of using Kotlin-specific test libraries and frameworks over their Java-specific counterparts will be highlighted, through code examples.

About the speaker: Volkert de Buisonjé is a software developer and DevOps engineer who joined Fastned in 2018 to "help save the world, and have fun while doing so". Although he had an extensive Java background, he was an early advocate for using Kotlin for backend development at Fastned, eager to switch over and make the leap from his Java comfort zone. He has never looked back since.

Talk by Nico: How the right architecture can simplify migrating to Kotlin

Abstract: Do you want to migrate your Java codebase to Kotlin, but are you not sure where to start? And how to do that in small steps? This talk shows you how architectures and techniques like hexagonal, vertical slice and domain driven design can help you move through big transformations, while at the same time increasing your code quality!

About the speaker: Nico Krijnen is a Cloud Solution Architect at Luminis. He helps organizations to translate available options into practical solutions for complex problems. For a big chunk of his career, he disrupted the DAM space by building an innovative file management solution called Elvis, which is being used by media organizations all over the world. Besides leading teams and giving direction, he likes to roll up his sleeves and experience first-hand how (and whether) the latest technologies work in the real world. He is never shy of making unconventional choices to achieve radical results.
