🔴 Mutability: Necessity or Habit?
Kotlin is a language designed to emphasize immutability, placing it on par with mutability. At the point of declaration, the programmer must decide: variable or value? This contrasts with languages like Java, which default to the use of variables and, consequently, presume the use of mutations. But what is the actual relevance of mutability in modern software development? Is it a practical necessity or merely a habit ingrained in the mindset of the imperative programmer? What are the implications of opting for immutable data by default? And what is gained or lost by challenging the habit of using mutations?
This session will explore these questions. Starting from a historical perspective, and through the use of simple practical examples, we will explore the merits and trade-offs of immutability as a core design principle in software development.
