Bodiam Castle and the Hidden Trails of East Sussex

Details
Discover the quiet beauty of East Sussex, a county steeped in history, rolling hills, and traditional English charm. Located within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this region is known for its patchwork of woodlands, meadows, ancient hedgerows, and peaceful villages. It’s a landscape shaped by centuries of farming and forestry, offering some of the most scenic and story-filled walking in the South East.
On this hike, we’ll explore one of East Sussex’s lesser-known but most rewarding walking routes. We’ll pass historic landmarks, follow quiet stretches of the Sussex Border Path, and visit the breathtaking Bodiam Castle, a medieval fortress straight out of a fairy tale.
This varied walk is ideal for those who enjoy a good mix of terrain—open fields, peaceful woodlands, orchards and village paths—with the added delight of discovering historic houses, moated castles, and hidden corners of the English countryside.
Highlights of the Day:
- Walk a tranquil section of the Sussex Border Path, rich in natural and historic character
- Pass by Delmonden House, a beautiful Grade II Listed Farmhouse that has a history dating back to the 16th Century, with elements of its Tudor origins still visible today
- Cross The Moor, a charming village and it's 13th-century St. Laurence church and a history of smuggling
- Admire Bodiam Castle (entry optional)—a magnificent 14th-century moated fortress with towers, battlements, and a rich medieval past
- Finish in the historic village of Robertsbridge, home to abbey ruins, medieval timbered houses, and quiet country charm
Expect undulating terrain, scenic picnic spots, and the chance to reconnect with nature (and yourself!) in great company. Whether you're drawn by the promise of medieval castles or the quiet joy of walking lesser-trodden paths, this is a journey that blends story and scenery in equal measure.
