Are you a mom aunt, sister, glamma, guardian, or someone part of a village raising a tween girl between the ages of 8 and 13? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this group is for you and her.
Hello, my name is Shameka and my daughter's name is Charley. Charley and I wanted to start this group named Kunnda Urafiki, which means "Creating Friendships" in Swahili for a few reasons.
Although spending time with family and school friends is great, Charley needs to open her circle to additional friendships outside of her everyday norms. (School/After-school practice). I also want to continue my plight as her mom to not allow her to be consumed and babysat by technology. If we sit down and talk to our daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc, we will hear and see they are no different than us. They too desire to be around like-minded marafikis (friends). The girls also desire to be around friends who offer different perspectives and outlooks on what the girls consider to be important in their lives at this age. The girls will always have an understanding that their conversations and friendships will be built and created in a respectful and positive way.
If we as positive women role models allow these meet-ups to happen with the girls we may help foster and create authentic friendships. If your daughter is like Charley, she may not step out of her comfort zone to forge new friendships on her own.
Charley's meet-up will partake in activities that are first and foremost on a 99% pocket-friendly budget. (Charley's mom is a school teacher lol) The girls will enjoy activities such as the movies, skating, museums, laser tag, sky zone, manicure/pedicure, libraries, and the philharmonic. They will also have trips to the zoo, and aquarium, picnics in the park, biking riding, painting classes, and a book club. The girls can also attend free local chess clubs and money managing and budgeting classes. But I'm sure the list will grow as the girls express other activities they would like to add to the list. Charley and I look so forward to meeting the new moms and the girls.
