Canoe camping, Temagami, 4 or 5 days
Hosted by The KW Backcountry Travel Meetup
Details
As a suggestion, I propose a 4-5 day trip the week of July 8 or 15th.
The local outfitters suggest we might begin day one with a meeting at their Temagami Lake Outfitters location (Google Maps 6 hours north of KW) to obtain canoes, gear, food (if need be), and permits, and be shuttled by barge or van and trailer to a launch point on the edge of Temagami’s backcountry. We journey on lake and river routes of the Anishinawbeg people, camping the first night beneath the stars.
Day 2 we paddle past ancient pictographs the rock faces on Diamond Lake, with time to stop for a swim and a leap from a forty foot cliff, before making camp on a remote island.
Day 3 sees a portage from Diamond Lake to Wakimika Lake via Pencil Lake, with signs of how this land was carved and etched by glaciers over 11,000 years ago. We camp and enjoy an evening on a sandy beach of Lake Wakimika.
Day 4 has a short lake paddle through the winding Wakimika River, through to Obabika Lake for an afternoon hiking old growth pine forests on the Obabika Trails.
The last day, #5 we paddle down Obabika Lake and portage into the northwest arm of Lake Temagami for a lunch stop in the “hub” of Lake Temagami, where a barge can pick us up for the return up the Northeast Arm back to the Temagami Outfitting, and disembarkation for the trip home. However, the options available to us are almost endless.
