The weather is perfect. No more excuses. Time to get the tour bike out.
Start at 8 AM, Saturday, May 4, from the Tim Hortons at University and Fischer Hallman, Waterloo. Bike to Port Burwell Provincial Park on Lake Erie, 145 km, and camp there Saturday night. Return Sunday.
For the proposed route please reference http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5916935 (detouring via Paris to meetup other riders). South of the 403 the route travels on quiet country roads of what was once a bustling tobacco growing area. At times you'll swear you're in rural Alabama.
This is my first bike trip of the season so I'll be in no particular hurry. Port Burwell Provincial doesn't actually open until next weekend so don't anticipate any luxuries once there.
If you're intrigued by the bike camping concept, would like to try it, but don't own bike panniers and ultralight camping gear, I'd be happy to loan you a bike trailer containing all the essentials (tent, camping mattress, etc). Just hookup the trailer to your quick release rear axle and go. (For an illustration of such a setup see photo below).
If you're intrigued by the concept but you're as out of bike-shape as I am this time of year, I'd be happy to reduce the distance. We could bike-rack the gear to the village of Drumbo reducing the distance by 35 km, and set out from there.
If you're intrigued by the concept but can't make it this weekend, stay tuned. By remnant hurricane season in late fall there will be many more. Raise a glass to 2013's Bike Camping 10.0! http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/3/b/f/event_23789631.jpeg
ps. I managed to get on the bike and escape before the monster worms caught up to me.
