Land Lubbers for Victoria Day!
Details
What is up with all the paddling trips on on Victoria Day weekend! Doesn't anyone realize we our fins evolved into legs millions of years ago?
I know I noticed which is why I am planning a backpacking trip Victoria Day weekend. I will be heading up to Algonquin Provincial Park.
The plan is to explore parts of the Western Uplands I have never seen and that are seldom visited. As a result this trip is more appropriate for experienced backpackers in good condition. This trip will involve hiking over 50KM in one weekend. Also, given my lack of experience of this section of trail and its remoteness we may more likely run into rough trail, blow-downs, etc.
The weather is usually very good with warm days and cool nights. The water may be a bit cold though depending on how hardy of a swimmer you are.
Itinerary:
Friday night: Drive up and camp or hotel somewhere in or near Huntsville. I have made no reservations for this yet. If you do please use the spreadsheet link below to arrange for site and room sharing.
Saturday: We push off from the "West Gate" trail-head of the Western Uplands Trail at 10AM on Saturday May 17th.
It is a 15.4KM hike to Susan lake where we will set up for the night.
Sunday:We will set out on a long day hike taking us around the north east loop of the uplands trail. This is the loop that will take us past East End Lake. Will we end up back at Susan Lake so no need to carry a full load which will be important as it will be a 23.2 KM day.
Monday:Hike back out to the trail-head via the way we came in. Given the longish hike (15.4KM) and the holiday please may no evening plans for Monday. You will be getting home late though likely before midnight.
Costs:The cost of the trip is based on the number of people who come.
• There is a reservation fee of $13 that will be split evenly between everyone on the trip.
• There is a per-person cost of $23.74 for the campsite.
• People are expected to split the cost of gas evenly with their drivers.
• Pay Pal fee ($1.06)
• Finally don't forget to bring cash for snacks and drinks during the drive as well.
I will collect an initial $25.24 will cover the campsite costs assuming 9 people come. I will collect any remaining fees at the trail-head.
