Massasauga Provincial Park triggers a reaction in many Ontarians. There's the connection to Ontario's only venomous snake, the Massasauga Rattle. There's the connection to Ontario's signature spider, Spider Lake of summer camp lore.
Lost in the mythology is Pete's Place Access Point, a down to earth boat launch with a park permit office next door, facing a slew of backcountry campsites a short paddle away. Perfect for a Friday night's escape from urban insanity.
If you venture too far into Georgian Bay from the shelter of Blackstone Harbor you're at the mercy of the predominant southwesterlies, still animated from a controversial winter. But stay within the inner bays and you'll experience the grace of a lazy summer day.
Speaking of which there is a site up north whose number shall remain secret. One side of its peninsula faces the setting sun, the other side, a sheltered bay where inflated air mattresses float aimlessly in the radiant sun. All is well with the world.
Itinerary:
Friday, June 13, leave as early as possible after work for Pete's Place Access Point. Pick up permits at the park office before it closes. Paddle a short distance to the backcountry campsite.
Saturday, If you can't make it in time for Friday night, not to worry, the Friday group will still be rubbing their eyes at 9:30 am. Kayak rental in Waubaushene opens at 8:30. If absolutely on time picking up your kayak, and well organized loading your boat, you could still make the 10:30 cutoff Saturday at site #511. Saturday night's secret site is a long paddle. We simply have to get going.
Sunday, reverse.
Cost:
$40 shared gas + $24 two nights camping = $64 before kayak rental.
Add kayak rental, $34 x 2 days = $68,
If renting, $64 + $68 = $132 before tax.
Kayak rental:
Swift Georgian Bay (http://swiftoutdoorcentres.com/stores/georgianbay.php) Waubaushene, Ontario.
A poly sea kayak lists at $34 per / day if renting for 2 days.
They will supply foam blocks and straps to attach to your car roof. One car can carry two kayaks.
Difficulty:
First time kayakers and/or backcountry campers welcome. Be advised this is a long hard paddle. Fitness rates higher than experience.
Difficulty as always is determined by wind and wave conditions at the time. On a perfect day you can paddle Georgian Bay on a stand up paddle board (SUP). On a bad day veteran sea kayakers find it challenging. We'll adjust to the group's athleticism and weather conditions.
Final word:
To quote a Georgian Bay frog, this will be "rivet, .... rivet....riveting...."
