Are you thinking about canoe or kayak camping this summer but don't know where to start? Are you wondering what basic camping gear is required for an overnight trip and how it all fits in a canoe or kayak? Do you wonder if your dog will actually stay in a canoe?

Or, do you already know all the above and are willing to impart your knowledge?

Best of all, do you want to actually camp for the night, campfire and all?

If answering yes to any of the above then get yourself down to Waterloo's Laurel Creek Conservation Area this Friday evening.

Anticipate a evening of peer to peer information sharing.

Bring:

  • this is a BBQ and potluck so bring something to BBQ and food to share

  • bring your expertise and your questions

  • demo your camping gear, set up your tent, filter water, let others try the same

  • show off your secret camping recipes, cook your meal on your backcountry stove

  • bring family, friends, Frisbees, dogs, bikes, kites

  • bring canoes or kayaks for others to try

Don't bring:

There is a ban on alcoholic beverages this time of year (why May 8 differs from June 8 escapes me).

Camping option:

We have campsite # 418 (with more sites available). Everyone is welcome to camp overnight. Consider earning your 'paddle camping 101' badge by running a simulated canoe/kayak trip. Launch, land, setup, light up the stars.

Campfire option:

Area 2 boat launch where we congregate for the BBQ doesn't have a fire pit but the overnight campsite does. Everyone is welcome to migrate there later in the evening. The park asks you to leave at 10:00 pm give or take if not camping.

Canoeing option:

Depending on member response there may be freebie canoes or kayaks to try. Last year we had quite a few on a week night.

The park rents canoes by the hour but the rental season doesn't start until May 16.

Cost:

Entry to Laurel Creek Conservation Area requires a day pass, $5.75.

If already a seasonal member of the Grand River Conservation Area that ticket will do.

If planning to camp for the night, split the $44.00 cost of the site by the number of people camping, or get your own site. The maximum per site is six campers and two tents.

Those camping don't pay the $5.75 day pass fee, it is considered part of your overnight shared campsite fee.

Parking:

Area 2 boat launch. Please park in the lot 50 meters from the lake. Keep the dock area for boat owners loading.
