We have 1 backcountry site reserved (9 people Max). If we get more signups, we will book 2nd site.

The first long weekend of canoe season should be celebrated with a trip to Killarney. Last year we discovered a beautiful campsite that divides Carlyle and Terry Lakes. It’s only a short paddle from the access point and we can set up a base camp and plan to stay there for 2 nights. From this location we have many options for day trips. We can paddle east to Johnnie Lake or head north to discover Norway or Sandy Lakes. We can paddle west to the end of Kakakise lake where the portage trail connects to “The Crack” a beautiful but steep and challenging hike to through the La Cloche mountain range. On a clear day we’ll enjoy a spectacular view of the park. This will be a combination of leisure and adventure. The long portages will be much lighter with day packs and we’ll get to discover many areas all in one trip.

Here are the details:

• Friday May 15th: Depart KW/GTA at a reasonable hour to make the 6 hour drive to Killarney. Stop at the French River Trading Post for dinner. Camp in the “Back 40” behind Killarney Outfitters. Camping is free for anyone renting canoes from the outfitters. Anyone who wishes to arrive earlier in the day can check out a day hike as there are a few 1-2 hr hikes available.

• Saturday May 16th: Pickup canoes or have them shuttled to Carlyle Lake Access Point. Load up canoes and paddle to our campsite. Set up camp and make lunch. Choose from leisurely activities or go for a paddle around the area.

• Sunday May 17th: Load up day packs and hiking boots. Portage 940m to Kakakise Lake. Paddle to west end of Kakakise lake and store canoes in the bush out of the way. Hike along the portage trail to the point where it connects with the Crack. Hike up to the top of the crack and enjoy lunch with a view. Hike back down and return to camp in time for dinner.

•Monday May 18th: Pack up camp after a leisurely breakfast and head back to Carlyle Lake Access point. Make the 6 hour drive home.

Cost:

-camping fees for three nights ($30 $24/backcountry $1 reservation fee and $5 for Friday or other group related expenses)

  • shared gas for vehicle driver (it is 477 km from north Waterloo, estimate $80 gas return for average sedan)

  • three day canoe rental (3 x $37 = $111 / 2 = $55),

add $10 for canoe delivery to Carlyle Lake.

Sample cost: two persons sharing a car and rental canoe

Per person, $30 + $40 gas + $55 canoe + $5 canoe delivery = $130

Optional Meal plan - Food will cost approx $30 for 3 days in the backcountry. I prefer to cook “family style” and share meal prep and clean up tasks as a group.
