Indecision is the worst decision you can make.

  • Under construction. Changes/inserts to original text now in italics. Confusing isn't it?

A long weekend is fast approaching and I'm looking at $200 worth of Temagami maps accumulated over the years. The kitchen table is telling me it is decided. We (me, myself and I) are kayaking out of Temagami access #8 Civic Holiday weekend. You are welcome to join us, canoe or kayak at your command.

  • Remind me it doesn't take two guest RSVP's to get the rest of 'we' there. That would be silly.

Drilling down on Jeff's Map 'Temagami, Southern', center stage is old growth forests. Tree huggers once confronted bulldozers to preserve these for future generations. Raging against the machine they shouted about visions, generations past. Raging against the mundane, anticipate visions, individuals present.

Either way, envision an enlightening weekend.

Itinerary:

Friday, July 31, Stumble out of work shellshocked. Join the crowds northbound on the annual migration. Sleep somewhere in a provincial park, how boring. Personally I prefer anonymous forest access trails of which I know a few. How high is your oil pan?

  • Marten River Provincial Park

  • my traffic app suggests its is only 5 hours away

Saturday/Sunday, Grab rental canoes at outfitter, presumably the main one in Temagami. Boot down the gravel access road to access #8.

  • Temagami Outfitting, Ultralight Kevlar canoe $39/day, standard Kevlar $32. Keep it simple, everybody use this outfitter. With enough boats we might be able to arrange affordable delivery to launch point.

  • Temagami Lake Access Rd. Unlike some others in the area this one is passable in your family sedan.

Set out for Temagami Island old growth forest. Loop down around McClean Peninsula. Then perhaps zip-dee-doo up the South Arm. Given a cross wind maybe hit Cross Bay on the return. Your imagination is as good as mine. While imagining, think of a big lake with possibly big wind and waves, possibly even big motorboats.

Monday. Return to 'we will figure it out from there' point, return rental canoes and/or kayaks. Start the long drive home. Nine hours?

  • 5 hours 2 minutes without traffic according to Google maps. You know how 'without traffic' works on the busiest weekend of the year.

Call from some point fictitious to tell work of all the obstacles in the way, you just can't make it back for Tuesday (just kidding).

  • My workplace is already warning me not to try this trick again :-)

In conclusion, we'll figure it out.

  • I'm open to proactive planning suggestions.

Cost:

Your Google search is as good as mine.

Car camping Friday night.

  • estimated $20 including firewood

Gas for a long drive north.

  • It is 517 km one way from Waterloo according to Google maps. So make it 1,200 km with Temagami side roads. Keep in mind we need to haul canoes at some point so ridesharing is limited to two per car. I'm guessing $60 per person for gas assuming two per car.

Rental boat if you don't own one.

  • $38 per day for an ultralight Kevlar from Temagami Outfitting. You want an ultralight. Tie down kits, $20 one time charge.

Probably car parking for three days.

  • Pretty sure there is a parking fee at access # 8.

Maybe even provincial park backcountry camping permit.

  • There are so many parks, conservation areas, nature preserves, and crown land areas, it is anybody's guess. We'll narrow it down once we have an anticipated route.

  • according to http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Canoeing/parks.htm Lake Temagami isn't a provincial park.

Boat Rental:

Your Google search is as good as mine. Hint, 'temagami kayak/canoe rental'

-Temagami Outfitting, Ultralight Kevlar canoe $39/day, standard Kevlar $32

  • Keep in mind for outfitters this is probably the busiest weekend of the year. Their inventory could max out. Let's stick to canoeing. Find a paddle partner, and reserve a boat, not necessarily in that order. Grab an ultralight Kevlar, now.

My preference is kayaking due to historical accident.

  • Never mind my preference. With an even number of paddlers does anyone object to sticking to canoes? Our loose-the-motorboats options improve immensely by portaging off the 'Rumble Lakes'.

Knowing Temagami better you are probably thinking canoeing by default. As the proud owner of both modes of travel, I could be convinced either way. The deciding factor is the number of participants; an even number = canoeing, an odd number = one person kayaking.

  • Once again, as of July 21, I'm favoring canoeing. Any objections?

In other words:

If details trip you up, perhaps this isn't your trip. Some of us want to be explorers when we grow up.

Hey!

Try Ken's recent Temagami meetup. Most of what we need to know is already there including this is one long drive for a three day weekend. They took five days to do it justice.

  • for future reference there is more than one local outfitter. Please use the other outfitter mentioned above. its simpler in the morning.
