How could you pass up a late summer canoe trip to a lake with a melodic native american name like Nunakina?

Pronounced with a soft i (new na kin ah) the name suggests grainy black and white photographs of next of kin. Imagine a last century photographer with a black hoodie draped over camera and wooden tripod. In the center of the photo the matriarch with a buffalo shawl over her shoulder. Towards the periphery, the great grandsons and granddaughters.

Survival was difficult back then. Demanded of us today? Survive a weekend slumber party backstopped by satellites traversing the sky.

If you are going to real world this please bring your next of kin. Way back a lake was named for the concept.

Way back (2011) we did this paddle and met new backcountry family, found newna kin. The rest is history.

note: editorial license, the name of the lake is intentionally mispelled in the writeup above

Itinerary:

Friday, Sep. 11. Optional. Drive up to a preliminary car campsite on Sherborne Lake Rd. The further along this road you go the more likely you'll wish you had a 4 by 4.

There is some portaging involved. It wouldn't be a legit canoe trip without it. You'll find detail of these on Jeffs Algonquin map http://www.algonquinmap.com/index.html Start at St. Nora in the bottom left (southwest) of the wall map.

Cost:

$12 per person per Saturday night camping.
