KWBT Summer of Love
Love of canoeing, that is. Who knows when the parks will open, but we’re planning a canoe trip anyway! Kayakers can set aside their sleek boats with storage measured in liters, "What? Now I can bring my chaise lounge?!", and backpackers leave behind their XLites and bring pads that don't crackle like a bag of chips!
This is a beginners-level trip - no portages, and maybe 4 hours of paddling out and back - an ideal trip for a backcountry newbie. We’re paddling in The Massasauga Provincial Park, home to the Five-lined skink, Ontarios only lizard, and the Massasauga rattlesnake, Ontario’s only venomous snake. This beautiful park borders the Canadian Shield and connects directly to the clear waters of Georgian Bay.
Come up Friday either during the day or after work, and canoe to our first campsite. On Saturday we canoe to our second campsite, and Sunday we’re back to the cars by late afternoon.
Canoes can be rented at the park. Trip details and an organizing spreadsheet will be sent later by email. No pets on this trip, thanks.
Camping fees are $11 each, plus $11.50 to park each vehicle. Parks policy presently provides for 100% refunds if the Park isn’t permitting trips at the time. Your RSVP puts you on the waiting list. I'll contact you to discuss experience level and related info, and after you transfer me $11, I change your RSVP to ‘going’. If something comes up and you can’t attend, I'll arrange for a replacement. This event is not ‘first come, first served’ - I’ll ensure that canoe-camping newbies are paired with experienced paddlers.
Your RSVP indicates your agreement with the terms of the Co-Participant Understanding at https://www.meetup.com/KW-Backcountry/messages/boards/thread/52807358
There's always someone to lend a hand on KWBT meetups, but you are responsible for your own transportation, food, gear, personal safety and COVID risk. You can DM me with any questions through this Meetup app or comment to the group in the comments section below.
