Update: the trip is now full. If you’re interested in attending, have your name on the Waitlist because if someone has to bail, that’s where I’ll look for a replacement.

Pt Pelee is the southernmost part of Canada’s mainland, and a birder’s paradise. Birds are everywhere here - you should wear a hat! Bird migration was the reason Point Pelee became a national park in 1918.

This will be my first sea kayak trip of the year, and it’s going to be a training session. Think wet-exits and re-entries, self-rescues and assisted rescues. Newbies, this one’s for you. Sea kayak rentals are locally available. Our paddling this weekend is based out of a local kayak outfitter, who will handle any required kayak renting and transporting.

I organize this event to introduce newbies to kayaking, and to prepare them for our summer kayaking trips in Georgian Bay. Most kayak trip organizers require that anyone signing up for a Georgian Bay paddle have some kind of intro kayaking training. We’ve run this event in previous years, and each time we rented out the outfitter’s entire fleet, so I’m posting this trip now so we can arrange for the kayak rentals we’ll need.

The weekend begins with a kayak intro session Friday evening. On Saturday we’ll be paddling in the protected marshlands of Pt Pelee National Park, and on Sunday we have some options for a day paddle.

We’ll be camping at a nearby campground on Lake Erie. $65 covers the weekend camping, camp firewood, and the Saturday Pt Pelee NP day pass. Plus kayak rental fees for those not bringing their own boats. Further trip details will be sent by email, as well as a spreadsheet which will assist in organizing ride-sharing. No pets on this trip, thanks.

Your RSVP puts you on the Waitlist. Then, send me a message on Meetup and tell me a bit about your camping and paddling background and related details. This event is not ‘first come, first served’ - I’ll ensure I have sufficient experienced paddlers to assist the newbies.

Your RSVP indicates your agreement with the terms of the Co-Participant Understanding at https://www.meetup.com/KW-Backcountry/messages/boards/thread/52807358

There's always someone to lend a hand on KWBT Meetups, but you are responsible for your own transportation, food, gear, and personal safety. You can message me through your KWBT Meetup account with any questions.
