Backpacking on the Ganaraska Trail - Wilderness Section
Details
The Ganaraska Trail extends 500 KM from Port Hope on Lake Ontario to the Bruce Trail near Collingwood. About 60KM is the "Wilderness Section" travels through Queen Elizabeth Wildlands Provincial Park. This section is described by the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Guidebook as being "rugged and in places strenuous". The Park offers a diverse eco system with very little development.
Camping will be "At Large" and I hear there are many flat spots to be found. Perfect conditions for people to get out and stretch their legs.
The plan is to start hiking at 10AM Saturday October 29th from Victoria Bridge. This means either a early start Saturday or a Friday departure with a tent or hotel along the way. Since the space at Victoria Bridge is reportedly small it is important people car pool to ensure parking space for everyone. Saturday we hike until a little before dark and camp wherever we find a good spot. Water is whatever we find along the way.
We will hike East long the Ganaraska Trail and on Sunday return via the Ganaraska+Montgomey Creek Loon Trail. Since I have never done this section of trail before accurate distance estimates are hard to make. Also it is dependent on the terrain and the participants.
If you have the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Guide this route is covered on maps 13-14.
This is a trip that is a intermediate level difficulty. People who attend this trip need to have prior experience backpacking and be comfortable hiking on their own. In previous hikes in the same park I found the terrain much more rugged and slower going that the average trail. As a result participants need to be in good physical condition.
The $1 reservation fee will be applied to your gas money or returned to you on the trip. This is to keep "no shows" from using up all the slots on the trip.
I will begin to work out carpools after registration closes. Expect an email from me Monday evening October 24th.
