A mind altering, muscle building, three day weekend. Paddle from Killarney, Chikanishing Access Point, to the Chicken Islands near the French River. Resist the temptation to explore the Foxes, Hawks, Big Rock, and Crume Islands on the way. Shift into explore mode only upon reaching Deer Island and points east. For bragging rights enter the French River's western arm before racing back.
Itinerary:
Friday, July 20, head north as soon as everyone can get off work. If renting from Killarney Outfitters, camp in their customer appreciation field, otherwise, at Killarney Provincial or a local private campground.
Saturday, head out from Chikanishing Access Point and camp on crown land in the proximity of Deer Island.
Sunday, paddle the remaining distance to the Chickens Islands, explore for the day, and return to Deer Island.
Monday, return to Killarney by 3:00 pm and start the six hour drive back to KW.
variations on the theme: if getting Monday off is an issue please express interest just the same, you may not be the only one.
Cost:
Shared gas + access point parking + kayak rental if applicable
( (477 km x 2) / # of passengers) + ($14/vehicle/day) + $37/day if renting kayak
- based on three people renting kayaks
$30 gas + $14 parking + $111 kayak = $155 / person
- based on three kayak owners (add Friday camping)
$30 gas + $14 parking + $12 camping = $56 / person
Kayak Rental:
Unless you want to car-carry your kayak, please use Killarney Outfitters, 1-888-222-3410, and request the $10 delivery to the 'Chik' access point. Doing so qualifies one to free camping Friday conveniently within 5 km of the putout. http://www.killarneyoutfitters.com/kayak-rental.php
Difficulty:
Physical fitness is more important than kayaking or camping skills. This isn't an ironman but its not a paddle in the park either.
