Have you always wanted to kayak to an island or remote area and go camping, but didn't know where to start?
This clinic will cover the basics of what you should bring, how to pack your kayak and some interesting places to go.
We are going to do something special with this outing.
Part One: a Clinic at the store on kayak camping essentials presented by Karen & Dorothy on Friday evening, August 1 at 7:30 PM. Bring what you have for camping gear.
Part Two: A paddle at the Dunham Reservoir on Saturday, August 2 at 10:00 AM to practice what we learned at the clinic Friday evening. We will be paddling to an area to set up camp... we will then teach you how to set up camp, filter water, how some stoves work and much more information that you will need for kayak camping.
Now here is the special part....the clinic and the paddle are not separate... if you sign up for the clinic you are also signing up for the paddle. Please do not sign up just to go on the paddle. You do not need to purchase any additional camping gear to participate.
The list of some items you should bring to the clinic are:
backpack; sleeping bag and pad (if you have them), clothes; hygiene items; map & compass; headlamp; food; water; bug repellent; sunglasses; and any other item you think you would need to go kayak camping.
DO NOT go out and purchase anything yet.....just bring what you have at home.
No skills are needed to participate.
Please be considerate of your fellow members... if you need to cancel please give as much notice as possible so someone else may attend.
Minimum age is 8 (8-15 yrs must have a participating adult with them, 16-17 yrs must have a parent/guardian sign participant agreement but do not need to attend)
please be dressed for the weather, we will go rain or shine
Dress in layers
Don't forget your kayak, and PFD, it must be a type I, II III or inflatable, (throwables (cushion type) are not acceptable). PFD's are required and must be worn while on the water, whistle, and paddle.
Directions from Albany/Troy area: take Route 2 East toward Clums Corners and Grafton or Route 7 East to Route 278 to Route 2. At the traffic light at the intersection of Route 2 and Route 278, note your mileage. Follow Route 2 East and after 5.1 miles, turn right onto Dunham Road and continue for approx. 1 mile to the boat launch/parking area on the left.
If you have any trouble finding us, Karen's cell is 518-779-3158 and Dorothy's cell is 518-641-9660, feel free to call or text. Cell phone coverage is spotty at the reservoir. Look for a black Jeep Liberty and white Jeep Patriot!
I hope you can join us for this outing.
Also, join us each Tuesday and Thursday evening to learn something new and exciting! Bring yourself, your spouse, or the whole family! All are welcome to attend, so we look forward to seeing you there!
