West Suburban German Meetup Group

Herzlich willkommen auf unserer Meetupseite! We are an inclusive and supportive group of friends who have been gathering at the La Grange Park Public Library for many years. Most of us are learners, and some of us are native speakers. Our shared goal is to improve/maintain our proficiency. A primary focus is on reading and translating German stories and/or other text. We do some conversational German at times, but not a difficult level. Sometimes we’ll watch a movie or listen to songs instead. We also like to exchange or share German language artifacts like books, DVDs, old letters, etc. Once or twice a year we go out on a local excursion, organize a holiday party, etc.

FAQ

What level of German do I need in order to participate?

- In theory/officially, we have no requirement. It's recommended that you at least have a foundation in basic grammar and vocabulary. Someone who has completed one or two beginner courses would likely be challenged, but still be able to participate. More specifically, our membership generally ranges from A2 to native.

When do you meet?

- Every Wednesday at 1:00 pm. Meetings typically last just shy of 2 hours.

I don't see an event scheduled, are you still meeting this week?

- Meetup.com only allows organizers to schedule 2 events per month for free, so only 2 events will be shown here per month.

Are remote/hybrid sessions organized?

- Not currently.

- We don't post all future events here, but you can assume that we're probably meeting beyond what is posted here. If you want to be sure, you can verify either by messaging us here or calling the La Grange Park Public Library (708) 352-0100.

Is there any cost for admission?

- Membership and participation are free. You may contribute snacks if you like, but there is no expectation to do so; especially if you're a first-timer. Also, printed copies are provided at the beginning of each meeting, so it's not necessary to obtain/purchase whatever book is being read that day.
