This talk by SideFX Game Technical Artist, Paul Ambrosiussen, will give an insight into how the Maps Baker replicates the functionality of the bake_texture node using nothing but VEX, all from inside COPs (which will be order of magnitudes faster than the go-to solution!). Waiting for renders massively slows down iteration times, which is one of the primary reasons the tool was built: fast, high-quality map baking.
