Highly available MySQL at Hulu

Details
This month we partnered with Hulu to bring you a talk by Yupeng Liao about Hulu's experience in building highly available (HA) MySQL database architectures & a talk by Luis Vinay of Diamond DevOps about DevOps & MySQL.
Many Hulu applications use MySQL as their backend database. Developers needed to be able to create highly available MySQL databases via automatic replication with the click of a button. Database Intelligent Rationing Tool (DIRT) is a shared MySQL database hosting platform which provides automated creation, replication and hosting of MySQL databases. This talk will focus on the architecture of this system, as well as the challenges in configuring a highly available MySQL database.

Yupeng is currently a Senior Software Engineer at Hulu. He joined as an intern in 2008 while studying Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University. He cut his teeth in Hulu's R&D division where he worked on improving the show recommendation algorithm, video transcoding and content ingestion. After being awarded a few patents for his work, his curiosity about systems engineering brought him to the DevOps team. There, he is primarily responsible for cloud infrastructure, resource management, service monitoring, and competing with AWS to add ‘AAS’ to commonly used technologies such as MySQL.

Luis Vinay has been playing around with computers since early 1991. His first contact with Unix was in 1997 and he discovered linux and OSS in 1999. Since then he hasn’t stop working with linux and OSS projects. For fifteen years he has been a Linux professional and a consultant for more than ten. Luis has always loved to work in factory environments and was amazed to see DevOps own roots in manufacturing and mass-production problem solutions. This helped him decide to specialize in DevOps culture and their ways. He is the Co-Founder of Flugel.it and a Founding Partner of Diamond DevOps.
