What we’re about
This group is for people who appreciate music and other forms of art beyond the mainstream, with a particular focus on the avant-garde or otherwise odd. Free Jazz, Musique Concrete, Atonality, Noise Music, Outsider Art, Surrealism, Dada, Junk Art, ...you name it! Not all events will necessarily be "weird", but simply off the beaten mainstream path.
This is intended to be an oasis from crass commercial banalities.
I'll post events that interest me, but I am also interested in hearing from artists, musicians, and other creative types about their events that I can share with members. Post your events and ideas in the "Discussions" section. I want this group to also be a vehicle that helps support artists and organizations that are doing interesting creative work.
The only requests are that we keep things friendly and civilized. MAGA not welcome.

Director: Akira Kurosawa Run Time: 143 min. Release Year: 1952 Language: Japanese
Starring: Bokuzen Hidari, Haruo Tanaka, Miki Odagiri, Nobuo Kaneko, Takashi Shimura
One of the greatest achievements by Akira Kurosawa, Ikiru shows the director at his most compassionate—affirming life through an exploration of death. We are are closing out the December portion of our retrospective on the legendary director’sw work with a brand 4K restoration of it thanks to our friends at Janus Films!
Takashi Shimura beautifully portrays Kanji Watanabe, an aging bureaucrat with stomach cancer who is impelled to find meaning in his final days. Presented in a radically conceived twopart structure and shot with a perceptive, humanistic clarity of vision, Ikiru is a multifaceted look at what it means to be alive.6 attendees

Kicking off our January series celebrating the great David Lynch with the intimate documentary chronicling his formative artistic journey!
Throughout January, 7th House, The Philosophical Research Society and Zebulon honor one of the great all time masters of cinema with their series Nightblooming Jasmine: A Celebration of David Lynch*.* Perhaps no artist has ever imbued such darkness with such mystery, wonder, beauty, and (so often) humor, a consumate creator whose journeys into the far reaches of imagination and consciousness have left an indelible and eternal mark on the world. This series features events at both PRS and Zebulon, kicking off with DAVID LYNCH: THE ART LIFE (2016) — an exploration Lynch's life, creativity, and formative artistic journey through all of its myriad, singular forms.
This intimate documentary looks at Lynch’s art, music, and early films, shining a light into the dark corners of his unique world and giving audiences a better understanding of the man and the artist. As he says, “I think every time you do something, like a painting or whatever, you go with ideas, and sometimes the past can conjure those ideas and color them. Even if they’re new ideas, the past colors them.” We’re invited in and given private views from Lynch’s compound and painting studio in the hills high above Hollywood, as he tells personal stories that unfold like scenes from his films. Strange characters come into focus only to fade again into the past, all leaving an indelible mark.

TARKOVSKY'S "MIRROR" (1975)
The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, USI was very impressed with the 3 other films by Andrei Tarkovsky that I have seen, and am eager to see this one. He made films that were visually stunning, unwind slowly and don't tie everything up in a neat bow at the end.

ABOUT THE FILM:
RELEASED IN: 1975 106 MINUTES DIRECTED BY: Andrei Tarkovsky
Introduction by filmmaker Lav Diaz
In Russian and Spanish with English subtitles.
A senses-ravishing odyssey through the halls of time and memory, Andrei Tarkovsky’s sublime reflection on 20th century Russian history is as much a film as it is a poem composed in images, as much a work of cinema as it is a hypnagogic hallucination. In a richly textured collage of varying film stocks and newsreel footage, the recollections of a dying poet flash before our eyes, dreams mingling with scenes of childhood, wartime, and marriage, all imbued with the mystic power of a trance. Largely dismissed by Soviet critics upon its release due to its elusive narrative structure, MIRROR has since taken its place as one of the titan director’s most renowned and influential works, a stunning personal statement from an artist transmitting his innermost thoughts and feelings directly from psyche to screen.
