What we’re about
This group is for people who appreciate music and other forms of art beyond the mainstream, with a particular focus on the avant-garde or otherwise odd. Free Jazz, Musique Concrete, Atonality, Noise Music, Outsider Art, Surrealism, Dada, Junk Art, ...you name it! Not all events will necessarily be "weird", but simply off the beaten mainstream path.
This is intended to be an oasis from crass commercial banalities.
I'll post events that interest me, but I am also interested in hearing from artists, musicians, and other creative types about their events that I can share with members. Post your events and ideas in the "Discussions" section. I want this group to also be a vehicle that helps support artists and organizations that are doing interesting creative work.
The only requests are that we keep things friendly and civilized. MAGA not welcome.

Language: Japanese
Starring: Kenjirō Ishiyama, Michiyo Aratama, Misako Watanabe, Ranko Akagi, Rentaro Mikuni
Kicking off the August portion of our Arthouse 101: Japanese Cinema series is Kwaidan, director Masaki Kobayashi’s fascinating meditation on memory, regret, and the delicate boundary between the living and the dead.
Taking its title from an archaic Japanese word meaning “ghost story,” this anthology adapts four folk tales. A penniless samurai marries for money with tragic results. A man stranded in a blizzard is saved by Yuki the Snow Maiden, but his rescue comes at a cost. Blind musician Hoichi is forced to perform for an audience of ghosts. An author relates the story of a samurai who sees another warrior’s reflection in his teacup.
Arthouse 101: Japanese Cinema is a curated 12-film trip through the evolution of Japan—from the quiet post-war resilience of the 1940s all the way to the radical reinventions of the 1990s. Each Monday this July-September, we will explore a new facet of this incredible nation’s cinematic journey throughout the 20th century! All films will be presented in their original Japanese language with English subtitles! - Dudamel Conducts Ellington and RavelHollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA

About this Performance
While on a 25-city tour of the US in 1928, Maurice Ravel took what would become a pivotal trip to Harlem with George Gershwin as his guide. The sounds of the upper Manhattan jazz clubs wove their way into the French composer’s brain and found their ways into his two beloved piano concertos, filled with syncopated rhythms and bluesy riffs. Rising piano star Seong-Jin Cho does double duty, joining Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil for both of these vibrant works. Each of the concertos is paired with a swinging symphonic work by jazz great Duke Ellington: the sonic neighborhood tour of Harlem and his ambitious telling of the history of Black Americans in Black, Brown and Beige. - Free Grand Performances: Prelude: Cinema ClassicalGrand Performances, Two California Plaza, 350 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90071, los angeles, CA

Every modern film score composer borrows from classical music to create those magical moments we remember from our favorite movies. Our second classical night, led by KUSC host Solomon Reynolds and students from the Colburn School of Music will look deep beneath those moments to illustrate the foundational classical pieces that became the palette from which legends like John Williams created their works from.
Solomon Reynolds
A native of Houston, TX, Indian-Samoan tenor Solomon Reynolds has equal passions for classical music and indie pop. Solomon is a three-time Encouragement Award recipient of the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition in the Houston, Utah, and Los Angeles Districts. He recently performed as Perchik in the First Nat’l Tour of "Fiddler on the Roof," directed by Tony-Award winning director Bartlett Sher. In addition to stage roles, Solomon is also an active singer-songwriter under his artist name, Solly. Catch him singing around town with the LA Opera, LA Master Chorale, and St. James’ in-the-City.
