Hi, everyone,
Remember Ms. Hattori, an instructor of traditional Japanese music who came to our meetup last February at Joanne's house to teach how to play those instruments?
https://www.meetup.com... (https://www.meetup.com/LACookingRecipesDiningandFrench/calendar/9567717/)
Now she's inviting me to her students' new year private concert in Torrance and we're extending the invitation.
This is a rare opportunity to listen to traditional Japanese music of Shamisen, Tsuzumi (Japanese drums), and Nagauta (traditional singing).
I came to know Ms. Hattori, through my other acquaintance, Ms. Awaya who is a famous koto player/teacher in Torrance who has connections in Hollywood as well. A member of my other group, David, was looking for a contact in Japan to apply for a scholarship offered by Japan Foundation and asked my help last year. I contacted Ms. Awaya again first time in 10 years, and she kindly promised to help and asked Ms. Hattori and other people in Japan who might know a professor at a music college who could supervise the proposed study program. Those instructors all cooperated immediately and one after another connections finally we were able to get connected to a very famous Japanese percussion player who's number one in the field holding a title of "Ningen Kokuhou" (National Treasure.) That was a very unusual thing to happen even in Japan, and we were so fortunate. Thanks to the connection the application was approved and he got the scholarship to study traditional music in Japan for two months last summer.
Ms. Hattori teaches students in Torrance and this is their new year concert called "Ohikizome." The attached picture was taken last year. She invited me again this year, and we're extending the invitation to the group. If you're interested, please sign up now. Since this is a private event, the address will be sent to the attendees only.
If you haven't listened to traditional Japanese music, it would be a great chance to be exposed to something very different and interesting.
Complimentary Japanese buffet including many tasty dishes will be served afterwards.
However, this is mainly a music event, so I'm allowing only members who are interested in listening to the music to attend.
Sincerely,
Sally
