About us

Welcome to the Lafayette Colorado Birding club !

We offer a non competitive birding environment where people can enjoy the local natural world with others. Our origins are an off-shoot of the Lafayette First Sunday 1 PM bird walks at Waneka Lake which have been extremely popular.

Bird walks will be guided and geared toward the group experience. We will bird mostly in and around the Lafayette/ Louisville area. When the birding gets slow as it often does some days, we will encourage others to share their birding observations, whether it be describing Magpie antics in your back yard, or how you located an Elegant Trogon in Madera canyon Arizona, we want you to share your story.

What, On Friday May 8th travel about 4 hours east to our private ranch and birding Oasis on the prairie . The ranch is thick with trees and available water for migrating and resident birds that you are unlikely to ever see along the front range in Colorado. Experienced birders will be on hand and are very welcoming of beginners.

Note this is a very relaxing birding event. Our property has an old farm house, with bathrooms. It is nestled in a forest of 10 acres of trees, and small draw. Surrounded by Prairie.
You can choose to set up a lawn chair in our front yard with a tasty drink and watch the actions various birds flit back and forth, or come to our water feature. Just sitting in one place you might see up to 25 ro 30 species over the course of a few hours, if you walk the property to the far corners of the pasture you might get as many as 50 species. And this event is great for beginners , the birds are very active and visible.

Schedule of events. Arrive Friday May 8th at your leisure in the town of Atwood. We will meet for dinner at one of the local eateries. Two choices usually.

At 8:00 am Saturday May 9th we will head to the birding Oasis where we will spend the day looking for the specialty birds of the area, I can promise you the trees will be full of birds. It won't be hard to find them

Saturday afternoon back to town with a couple extra stops along the way.

Note prairie chickens are in the area but they won’t be “lekking” this late in the season. Last year one walked across our driveway.

As for lodging

Okay you veterans know the deal. Please make your reservations at the ITll motel ASAP as it will fill up this year. Camping is also an option. For those that sign up and are new, I will send details on camping and hotel. Email me at astormchaser2002 AT yahoo

Hello everyone,
Art has graciously asked Erin Watson and me to serve as hosts for this year’s spring birding event, and we’re excited to help make your experience as easy, enjoyable, and memorable as possible.
I truly believe this is the best one-day birding site I’ve ever visited. It’s a genuine birding oasis, and I’m deeply grateful to Art and Sandy for once again sharing their ranch with all of us.
For those who are new to the Fifth Annual Western Kansas Amazing Spring Birding Event, Erin will give a brief orientation Friday night after dinner. She’ll cover where to go, what you might see, and how to make the most of your time in the field.
To help us communicate more easily throughout the event, please send your name, email address, and phone number to me at maczuzakj@gmail.com.
We’re really looking forward to birding with you and sharing an incredible spring weekend together!
Best regards,
Jane"
