The steep, slippery hills and occasional bikers make this a HARD (not moderate or easy) hike. It's 7.6 miles and 1480 elevation and pretty much a straight shot to Russel Peak and back. Bring poles if you use them and lots of water and a snack. It should be dry and we should have it done in less than 3 hours.

Here's a rough idea of the hike:
Starting from Lafayette Ridge Staging area off Pleasant Hill road, we'll hike the trail south parallel to the road before hairpin turning to start the climb up, connecting to the fire road, climbing the Lafayette Ridge Trail past the barn, snaking around all the way up until we pass through the gate. From there it drops down a bit but stays mostly flat for some time, before climbing upto a juncture where we'll go right. We follow that path to the left, staying flat for some time before begining to climb up again that begins a series of rolling hills, ending with two big hill climbs before we climb up to the picnic table at Russel Peak. The hills have lots of loose gravel and the sand can make it slippery. Poles are recommended (though I don’t use them).
