Lafayette Ridge Saturday at 8:30
Details
The spring bloom is just starting to color the hills in orange and purple and the weather should be perfect.
Having said that, the Lafayette Ridge and Contra Costa Hiking Meetup group is for seasoned and serious hikers only. At 7.5 miles and 1480 elevation with lots of rolling hills, it can be a challenging hike.
Starting from Lafayette Ridge Staging area near Springhill/Pleasant Hill roads, we'll take the Lafayette Ridge Trail south parallel to the road before hairpin turning to start the climb up connecting with the service road, taking it up and around the bend. We'll climb past the barn all the way up to the one little dip before going up through the gate. From there we'll stay to the left, following the Lafayette Ridge trail where it dips and curves around some nice houses, before climbing up a bit and turning right at the juncture. We'll follow the path immediately to the left on the gentle downslope that eventually climbs up again to start the series of rolling hills. Thsee end with three straight hill climbs up to the picnic table at Russel Peak. We'll take a short break there and then return the way we came. Usually it takes two and half hours, give or take a few minutes.
The hills have lots of loose gravel and sand and can be slippery. There are also bicyclists and cows to be aware of. Dogs are discouraged.
Bring water, snacks and poles, if needed.
