Closh: Shell Scripting with Clojure
The command-line shell is an essential part of a developer toolbox. Many of our production systems depend on it. Shell scripts are used to tie together deployments and orchestrate cloud systems. However, shells accumulated lots of incidental complexity. There are many dark corners that surprise even seasoned programmers. Unix philosophy recommends writing scripts by composing smaller programs and piping plain text between them. Functional programming is similar, but we compose functions and work with with proper data structures, which is much more powerful.

In this talk I will explore how a shell combining best of Bash and Clojure could look like. I will introduce Closh, a unix shell written in Clojure. We will learn about benefits of creating a shell using modular and composable parts. We can leverage well designed expressive language and combine it with existing command-line programs. We are also able to use Clojure/Java libraries directly from the command line.

Testing database applications in Java and Clojure - a practical guide to system tests.

When programmers want to verify that the application works as a whole, they face specific challenges. Such "system tests" should strive to accomplish some general goals, that aim at avoiding common pitfalls and ensuring that the programmers' efforts are expended effectively. The talk explores time-tested, successful practices for writing system tests. While the practices are generic, specific tools are introduced to assist writing the tests in Java and Clojure ecosystems. Finally, the system tests benefits are assessed and system tests are compared with unit tests, drawing a conclusion about best testing strategy as of today.
