What we’re about
Meet other local progressive Muslims and get together in an open, compassionate and non-judgmental environment. We welcome new Muslims, old Muslims, LGBTQ Muslims, and Muslims in mixed-faith relationships. Our goal is to build a community in Los Angeles based on the core Islamic values of compassion, equality, social justice, and human rights. A place where you can be yourself AND Muslim!
This progressive Muslim community was founded on January 6, 2006 and is the Los Angeles chapter of the national and the oldest progressive Muslim organization, Muslims for Progressive Values, a 501 (c) (3), founded in July 2007. For more details about MPV please visit www.mpvusa.org.
Meetups are scheduled very regularly as announced. Activities include socializing, discussion, spiritual conversation, youth open mics, zikr, hiking, social activism/volunteer work, celebrating holidays, and experiencing art, film, and music.
We gather regularly mostly for discussion and spiritual reflection. All who come with an open mind and loving heart are welcome--including non-Muslim friends, significant others, etc. Topics are announced in advance so that those interested can prepare for a meaningful and informed discussion.
In setting up our prayer space, we strive to create a caring environment in which no one is segregated or excluded. Attendees are invited in turn to lead prayer, regardless of gender. This means that the prayer may be led by a man or a woman, the sermon (khutbah) may be delivered by a man or a woman. The group of congregants is mixed, standing and seated together, like we do in Mecca, which we call "Mecca-style". Of course, individual men and women can choose to stand/sit to one side or the other if they prefer. We also end our prayer segments with spiritual songs.
For information on MPV and the principles that inform and guide us, please visit About Us.
We are happy to announce that we have an officiant available. Officiant is open to marrying mixed faith couples as well as same-sex couples.
Please contact Ani at info@mpvusa.org for information on Islamic interfaith wedding services.

Heartfelt Talk Circle
Location not specified yetSalams and Greetings.
I have been intending to set up a group talk for some time, and I am grateful to Ani for the chance to create this event. I am hopeful that it will bring great benefits to many and that we will continue to have regular meetings. The following will briefly clarify what I think needs to be articulated to share openly with a very accepting audience.
Revealing specific feelings, trauma, or even certain joys in life might seem like a taboo topic in our community and family, especially among mature adults who may have past encounters and or are navigating experiences later in life. Certain emotions tend to re-emerge despite all efforts to bury them and, in fact, seek to be expressed. It is important to realize that vulnerability can be a powerful means for connection and healing.
This talking circle is created for individuals to speak from the heart and cultivate empathy through attentive listening with an open mind. We will follow guidelines for taking turns, enabling each participant to express their personal wounds, desires and experiences in a secure, non-judgmental, and confidential environment. One may decide to skip their turn or to let everyone hear the silent outburst. The focus is on emotional authenticity rather than fixing problems. The goal is for individuals to release emotions, alleviate stress, process feelings, and feel supported by others.
We will convene in a comfortable circle, allowing ourselves to be present and permitting our emotions to flow. The venue will be communicated to those who RSVP or to those who request it in a private message. I understand that driving distance and timing can be stressful, but I aim to accommodate all in area of LA, OC and RV, so a centrally location around Buena Park, CA 90620, will minimize the travel distance. The timing is also arranged for the convenience of attendees.
I am eager to see many of you at this initial meeting and subsequently on a regular basis. Once again, please RSVP privately if you prefer to remain discreet; however, indicating your attendance will encourage others in this already exclusive group. My email address is nirjee@yahoo.com.2 attendees
