Buttermere, Robinson & Dale Head - 10 Miles

Details

Start: St James’ Church, Buttermere (CA13 9XA)

Distance: Approximately 10 miles (16km)
Ascent: Around 3,500ft (1,066m)
Time: 6–7 hours, depending on pace and conditions
Difficulty: strenuous — a good level of fitness is required. Some steep climbs and exposed ridges.

We start this classic Lakeland horseshoe from St James’ Church in Buttermere, a charming spot to gather and appreciate the peaceful setting before we head up into the fells.

From the church we make our way westwards and then north-upward toward High Snockrigg, a small but dramatic fell offering stunning views back over Buttermere and Crummock Water — a perfect first photo opportunity.

From here we continue upward, following a clear path to reach Robinson (737m), the highest fell of the day. At the summit, we’re rewarded with extensive views across the North Western Fells — from Haystacks and Grasmoor to the dramatic Scafells in the distance.

Dropping down briefly, we follow a path across the col to Hindscarth (727m). The route then traces the dramatic Hindscarth Edge, a lovely ridge walk with wonderful views into the Buttermere valley below.

The path soon brings us to Dale Head (753m), a majestic fell that dominates the head of Borrowdale. From the summit we can appreciate a 360-degree panorama — a true highlight of the walk.

From Dale Head we begin our descent. The path drops past Dale Head Tarn, a small, peaceful pool set in a dramatic bowl. Continuing downward through Rigghead Quarries, we follow the path into the valley bottom and into the lovely small settlement of Rosthwaite.

Here we can toast a successful day in the fells with a well-deserved drink at the Royal Oak Hotel, a friendly, traditional pub offering a range of local beers and hearty food.

✅ Tip: Bring plenty of water, snacks, and warm, waterproof clothing — conditions can change quickly on the tops.

✅ Fitness: Although it’s a strenuous walk, it’s doable for reasonably fit walkers who are comfortable with sustained climbs and a bit of exposure on ridges.

🐕 Dogs: It’s a dog friendly group so feel free to bring your dog. There maybe some sheep on the way so if you are letting your dog off the lead please make sure you have got good recall.

⛺️ Camping: I will be staying at Chapel House Farm camp site, Rossthwaite on the Friday & Saturday nights. If anyone else wants to stay you’re more than welcome to join me. Phone on 01768 777 256 or email on chapelhousefarmcampsite@gmail.com for booking. Outside the campsite there is a bus stop where we can catch a bus to take us to the walk start.
