Hurstwood, Widdop Reservoir & Thursden Valley - 12 miles
Details
This is a superb circular walk taking in open moorland, dramatic gritstone outcrops, peaceful reservoirs, wooded valleys and historic buildings, with a real variety of scenery throughout.
We start at Hurstwood Reservoir, following the well-defined track across Extwistle Moor towards the remote and atmospheric Widdop Reservoir. After crossing Ridehalgh Lane, we begin a steady climb up onto the moor, visiting a striking sequence of gritstone landmarks: Raven Stones, Cow Stones, Grey Stones, before descending back down past Rigging Stones.
We then re-cross Ridehalgh Lane and follow a clear path down into the beautiful Thursden Valley. Here the landscape softens as we walk alongside Thursden Brook, enjoying sheltered paths and flowing water. The route then climbs gently through woodland to reach Monk Hall, after which we follow Monk Hall Lane and Shay Lane onto Todmorden Road.
From Todmorden Road we branch off onto a quieter path leading towards Extwistle Hall. Extwistle Hall is a striking, secluded country house with medieval origins, dating back to at least the 14th century.
From the hall we drop down into woodland once more, crossing Swinden Water and following a pleasant track that brings us into Worsthorne. The final section takes us across open fields, gradually returning us to Hurstwood Reservoir, completing the loop.
