Starting from the car park at Nuttall Park in Ramsbottom, this varied circular walk takes in riverside paths, peaceful woodland, open moorland, and one of the West Pennine Moors’ most iconic landmarks.

We begin by following the River Irwell, enjoying a gentle and scenic start before turning off into Buckden Wood within the Stubbins Estate. From here the route climbs steadily through attractive woodland trails, eventually emerging onto the wide open landscapes of Holcombe Moor, where we’re rewarded with expansive views across the surrounding hills and valleys.

From the moor we descend into the beautiful Redisher Woods Nature Reserve, a lovely area of mixed woodland and quiet paths. After this we make our final ascent up to the historic Peel Tower.

Peel Tower stands on Holcombe Hill and was built in 1852 as a memorial to Sir Robert Peel, the former Prime Minister who founded the modern police force — hence British police officers being nicknamed “Bobbies” or “Peelers.” The tower has become a well-known local landmark and offers fantastic panoramic views across Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and beyond on a clear day — a perfect spot for a well-earned rest and photos.

After visiting Peel Tower, we descend into Holcombe village before completing the circular route back to the car park at Nuttall Park.

Expect: woodland trails, moorland paths, steady climbs and descents, and potentially muddy sections depending on recent weather — good footwear recommended.

Dogs: well-behaved dogs are welcome, but must be kept under close control and on leads around livestock and sheep. Please be mindful of other walkers and wildlife along the route.

Suitable for: regular walkers with a reasonable level of fitness.
