Hurst Green, Longridge Fell and Stonyhurst College - 9 miles
Details
Join us for a scenic circular walk from the pleasant village of Hurst Green into the wide-open spaces of Longridge Fell, along the meandering banks of the River Hodder, past one of Lancashire’s most striking historic schools, and back again. Much of the route touches on the Tolkien Trail, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s connections with the Ribble Valley landscape — an area thought to have influenced his descriptions of Middle-earth.
We begin in the village of Hurst Green, following well-waymarked paths and field tracks gently outward toward Longridge Fell. The ascent up Longridge Fell is steady and rewarding — perfect for those who enjoy panoramic views.
From the summit, on a clear day, you’ll be treated to views across the Ribble Valley and the Bowland Fells. Longridge Fell’s long ridge was historically common grazing land and former quarrying area, with peat and grassland rich in upland flora.
After cresting the fell, we descend toward the peaceful valley of the River Hodder. The route weaves through green farmland and hedgerows, gradually bringing us down to the riverside.
Once on the river bank, we follow a tranquil path that tracks the Hodder’s bend toward Cromwell’s Bridge — a fine stone crossing with links to the era of the English Civil War. Local lore suggests that Parliamentary forces under Cromwell passed through this area during the turbulent 17th century.
Leaving the river behind, we pick up the public footpath toward Stonyhurst College, the famous Jesuit boarding school founded in the late 16th century. The path threads through the historic college grounds — rich with heritage buildings, chapels and mature parkland.
Stonyhurst’s deep ties to English Catholic history, its rare archives and beautiful architecture make this stretch a highlight of the walk.
From the college, we follow a quiet series of rights-of-way and bridleways that loop us back toward Hurst Green. The last section undulates through fields and wood edges, offering a pleasant finish and opportunities to reflect on the day’s discoveries.
