The Valley Of Desolation, Simon’s Seat & Troller’s Gill - 13.5 miles
Details
Join us for a stunning circular walk in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, packed with dramatic scenery, riverside paths, woodland trails, and one of the most famous viewpoints in the area.
We’ll start from Barden Bridge Car Park, crossing the historic stone bridge over the River Wharfe. The bridge dates back to the medieval period and was once an important crossing for travellers and packhorses moving through the valley.
From there, we follow the River Wharfe upstream toward the famous The Strid. This narrow stretch of river is one of the most dangerous in the UK—what looks like a small gap hides powerful currents and deep underwater caverns. Historically, it’s said to have claimed many lives, including that of the “Boy of Egremont” in local legend.
Continuing along the riverside, we reach Bolton Abbey Visitor Centre, part of the estate surrounding the ruins of a 12th-century Augustinian monastery. The priory here was founded in 1154 and dissolved during the reign of Henry VIII in the 16th century.
We then cross the river and begin our ascent into the dramatic Valley of Desolation, a landscape shaped by a devastating storm in 1826 that caused massive flooding and landslides, dramatically altering the terrain.
Our climb continues up to Simon’s Seat, a prominent rocky outcrop offering spectacular panoramic views across Wharfedale—well worth the effort!
After soaking in the views, we descend toward the atmospheric Trollers Gill, a narrow limestone gorge steeped in folklore. Local legends speak of goblins and spirits inhabiting the dark, rocky passage.
We’ll then make a welcome stop at The Brownie Barn for a quick pit stop—perfect for a coffee and a well-earned treat.
Finally, we follow a gentle riverside path along the River Wharfe back to Barden Bridge, completing a varied and memorable circular route.
