Join us for a fantastic moorland adventure packed with big views, iconic landmarks, and a rich slice of local history.

We begin at the White House Inn, a historic hilltop pub perched on the old Lancashire–Yorkshire boundary. From here, we head out onto the open moors, passing the scenic Blackstone Edge Reservoir. These reservoirs were constructed during the Industrial Revolution to supply water to the booming textile mills of the region.

We continue onwards to the remote Warland Reservoir, surrounded by classic Pennine landscape. From here, we join the famous Pennine Way, following it across the high moors towards the iconic Stoodley Pike.

Standing at over 1,300 feet above sea level, Stoodley Pike dominates the skyline for miles around. The current monument dates from 1856 (after the original collapsed) and commemorates the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The views from here, weather permitting, are some of the best in the South Pennines.

We then descend into the hillside village of Lumbutts, once a busy mill settlement during the height of the textile era. From Lumbutts, we pick up the Pennine Bridleway, crossing the historic Rochdale Canal. Opened in 1804, the canal was a vital transport route linking Manchester with Yorkshire.

A key highlight of this section is walking above the Summit Tunnel. Opened in 1841, this is a railway tunnel (not a canal tunnel), carrying the Manchester to Leeds line beneath the moors. At the time of its construction, it was one of the longest railway tunnels in the world and remains an impressive feat of Victorian engineering.

After crossing back over the canal, we visit the lovely Animals in Distress Field of Dreams, where we may see donkeys and ponies enjoying their peaceful surroundings.

Finally, we climb back up to the White House Inn, completing a rewarding circular route through some of the finest Pennine scenery.
