Clapham, Gaping Gill & Ingleborough - 8 miles
Details
Join us for a fantastic Yorkshire Dales classic taking in one of the most dramatic and historically rich routes up Ingleborough.
We’ll start in the village of Clapham, which was transformed in the 19th century by the Farrer family of Ingleborough Hall. They landscaped the estate and created the attractive pathways we’ll follow at the start of the walk.
Heading out, we pass Ingleborough Cave, discovered in 1837 and later developed as a show cave during the Victorian era, when cave exploration became a popular pursuit. From here, we enter the dramatic limestone gorge of Trow Gill, a natural fissure carved out over thousands of years by glacial meltwater.
We then pass the famous Gaping Gill, one of Britain’s largest underground chambers. It was first descended in 1895 by French caver Édouard-Alfred Martel, marking a major moment in the history of British caving. Even today, it’s a key site for potholers and is occasionally opened to the public via winch meets.
From here, the route climbs onto the open fell and up to the summit of Ingleborough. The flat-topped summit is thought to have been the site of an Iron Age hill fort, with remnants of ancient stone walls still visible — a reminder that people have been drawn to this high vantage point for thousands of years.
After taking in the views, we descend via the main path towards Ingleton. This village grew during the Industrial Revolution, with quarrying and textile production playing a significant role in its development.
We’ll finish in Ingleton, where we’ll catch a bus back to Clapham.
