Cautley Spout and The Howgills

Please meet at Loftus Hill car park in Sedbergh at 08.30. This is a pay car park, but there is usually plenty of free parking within 5 mins walk, especially on Busk Lane. GR 658917.

Starting from Loftus Hill car park in Sedbergh, this circular walk follows The Pennine Journey north up the Rawthey Valley towards Cautley Spout, England’s highest above-ground waterfall.
The route climbs steadily through the valley with good views of the surrounding Howgill Fells before reaching the dramatic waterfall beneath Cautley Crag.
From Cautley Spout, a steeper ascent leads onto the open fellside and up to the summit of The Calf, the highest point in the Howgills. The summit gives wide panoramic views across the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the Pennines.
The return route follows the ridge south over the rolling Howgill tops before descending via Winder, which overlooks Sedbergh and the Rawthey Valley. A final descent returns to the town and Loftus Road car park.
I'm planning on just a moderate pace, as it might be warm, and 2 or 3 breaks for food and drink (no shops or cafes on this route so please bring what you need).
This is a relatively quiet range of hills and a great way to get away from the crowds on midsummer day. If it is warm, please bring plenty of water, sun cream, a sun hat etc...
Hope to see you there!
