Join us for a superb moorland adventure taking in some of the finest scenery in Airedale and Wharfedale. This challenging circular walk begins at Victoria Road car park in the heart of historic Saltaire and combines industrial heritage, dramatic gritstone landscapes, expansive moorland views and fascinating local history.

Our walk starts by passing the magnificent Salts Mill, built in 1853 by the Victorian industrialist Sir Titus Salt. Salt moved his textile business from Bradford to create a model village where his workers could live in healthier surroundings away from the pollution of the city. The village was named Saltaire, combining Salt’s surname with the nearby River Aire. Today, Saltaire is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its remarkably preserved Victorian architecture and its importance in the history of town planning and social reform.

Salts Mill itself was once one of the largest textile mills in the world, employing thousands of workers in the manufacture of alpaca wool cloth. Following the decline of the textile industry, the mill stood largely empty until entrepreneur Jonathan Silver transformed it during the 1980s into a thriving cultural and commercial centre. Today it houses galleries featuring the work of David Hockney, along with shops, cafés and creative businesses.

From Salts Mill we pass through the beautiful Roberts Park before climbing steadily through the wooded slopes and open heathland of Shipley Glen, a popular Victorian leisure destination that once attracted thousands of visitors arriving by tramway and railway.

Continuing onto Bingley Moor, we enter a landscape shaped by centuries of farming, quarrying and ancient routeways. The wide-open moor provides excellent views across West Yorkshire before we reach the famous Ilkley Moor.

A highlight of the day is our visit to the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle. Despite its name, the circle contains more than twelve stones and is thought to date from the Bronze Age, standing as a reminder of the area’s prehistoric past.

We then continue to Ilkley Crag before reaching the iconic Cow and Calf Rocks. According to local legend, the distinctive rock formation was created when a giant escaping an angry witch leapt across the valley, causing part of the rock to break away and form the “Calf”.

After taking in the spectacular views over Wharfedale, we begin our return journey via Burley Moor and Eaves Crag, following quieter paths across open moorland and rocky outcrops. We then descend towards Baildon before crossing Baildon Bank, where superb views stretch across Airedale towards the Yorkshire Dales.

Our final section returns us to Saltaire, completing a memorable circuit through landscapes that tell the story of Yorkshire from prehistoric times, through the Industrial Revolution, to the present day.
