Blencathra - 8 Miles

Join us for one of the Lake District’s most iconic mountain walks as we tackle the mighty Blencathra from Threlkeld.

Starting from Threlkeld Cricket Club car park, we’ll make our way steadily uphill via Scales Fell, enjoying increasingly impressive views across the Northern Fells. Our route takes us to the beautiful and dramatic Scales Tarn, a stunning mountain tarn nestled beneath the towering cliffs of Blencathra.

At Scales Tarn, the group will split into two options:

Sharp Edge Route (Led by Chris)
For those with a good head for heights and some scrambling experience, Chris will lead the ascent via the famous Sharp Edge. This narrow arête is one of the most exhilarating ridge walks in the Lake District, providing a real mountain adventure with spectacular views and an exciting scramble to the summit plateau.

Alternative Route (Led by Andrew)
For anyone who would prefer to avoid Sharp Edge, Andrew will lead a less exposed route around the left-hand side of Scales Tarn before ascending to the summit by the easier path.

Both groups will meet at the summit of Blencathra (868m), where we can enjoy a well-earned break and take in the panoramic views across the Lake District, the Pennines and, on a clear day, even as far as Scotland.

Our descent follows the magnificent Hall’s Fell Ridge, another classic Lakeland route offering superb views and a fitting finale to this memorable mountain day before returning to Threlkeld.

• Ascent: Approximately 2,500 ft (760 m)
• Grade: Strenuous mountain walk
• Sharp Edge involves scrambling and significant exposure. It is not suitable for anyone uncomfortable with heights.
• Sturdy walking boots, suitable clothing, food and plenty of water are essential.
