High Cup Nick (The British Grand Canyon) - 10 Miles
Details
Join us for one of the finest walks in the North Pennines, taking in one of England’s most spectacular natural landmarks.
Starting from the picture-postcard village of Dufton, we follow a steadily climbing track through the atmospheric remains of the ancient lead mining landscape on Threlkeld Side. Here, old mine workings, spoil heaps and ruined buildings are reminders of an industry that shaped this remote landscape for centuries. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the area prospered through lead mining, with the Quaker-owned London Lead Company bringing improved housing, schools and even piped water to Dufton.
Continuing onto the open fell, we reach the peaceful Rundale Tarn, a wonderfully wild spot surrounded by sweeping moorland. From here we’ll follow the beck across remote terrain towards the dramatic reveal of High Cup Nick.
Nothing quite prepares you for the moment the ground suddenly falls away into this magnificent U-shaped glacial valley. Often described as the “Grand Canyon of the North”, High Cup Nick was carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age, while its towering cliffs are formed from the famous Whin Sill dolerite that also appears at Hadrian’s Wall and High Force. It’s one of the most spectacular geological features in England and a perfect place to stop for lunch while taking in the breathtaking views.
Our return follows the side of the valley, offering continuous panoramic views over High Cup Gill and the Eden Valley before descending steadily back to Dufton, where the welcoming village pub provides the perfect opportunity for a well-earned drink after a memorable day on the fells.
