Ripponden, Ryburn & Baitings Reservoirs - 11 Miles

Starting from Royd Lane Car Park in the heart of Ripponden, this scenic circular walk explores waterfalls, ancient woodland, reservoirs and the beautiful Ryburn Valley.

We begin by following the Calderdale Way, one of West Yorkshire’s premier long-distance trails, climbing gently out of the village before reaching the picturesque Mill Bank Waterfall. The route then continues through Highlee Clough, where steep-sided woodland, rushing streams and moss-covered rocks create one of the valley’s most attractive hidden corners.

Descending to the River Ryburn, we follow the watercourse upstream through peaceful countryside and woodland. The river played a vital role in the area’s industrial development, powering numerous textile mills that once lined the valley. During the Industrial Revolution the Ryburn Valley became an important centre for cotton spinning and weaving, bringing prosperity to the local communities.

The walk continues through the lovely Rishworth Hall Wood before cutting across Hanson Wood to reach Baitings Reservoir. Constructed between 1948 and 1956, the reservoir supplies drinking water across West Yorkshire. The flooding of the valley submerged parts of the old road, bridges and farmland, traces of which can occasionally still be seen when water levels are exceptionally low.

We then follow the excellent shoreline track around Baitings Reservoir, enjoying wide views across the surrounding Pennine hills. Continuing towards Ryburn Reservoir, we pass through a landscape shaped by centuries of farming and industry. Ryburn Reservoir, completed in 1933, sits in a particularly attractive wooded setting and provides a peaceful contrast to the more open surroundings of Baitings.

The route passes the impressive Beeston Hall Rocks, a dramatic gritstone outcrop hidden amongst the trees, before entering Drumming Wood. We then rejoin the River Ryburn and follow it downstream back towards Ripponden.

Ripponden itself has a rich history stretching back hundreds of years. The village grew around an important crossing point on historic packhorse routes linking Yorkshire and Lancashire. Long before the railways arrived, traders carrying wool, cloth and goods travelled these routes across the Pennines, helping establish Ripponden as an important local settlement.

Back in the village, anyone wishing to stay for a drink is welcome to join us at the historic Old Bridge Inn. Dating back over 700 years, it is believed to be one of the oldest pubs in Yorkshire and provides the perfect place to relax after a day on the hills. From there, it’s just a short walk back to the car park.

Terrain: Woodland paths, riverside trails, reservoir tracks, farm tracks and uneven ground. Some muddy sections are possible after rain. Walking boots are recommended.
