Trollers Gill, a limestone gorge, is named after a local legend of trolls that were said to inhabit the area. These trolls were believed to roll stones down the gorge at passing humans. It’s also home to many other mythical beings: sprites, pixies, goblins, gnomes, and boggarts, as well as a huge black doglike creature known as the Barguest whose gaze could turn the unwary to stone. The Barguest is said to have inspired the legend of the Hound of the Baskervilles.
