MT MEETUP #6: Integrating MT with CAT Tools
Detailed descriptions of the presentations will be published here shortly. We are looking forward to the following speakers:
TALK 1
The ergonomics of converging translation technology
Maureen Ehrensberger-Dow & Martin Kappus
IUED Institute of Translation and Interpreting, ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences
The availability of new linguistic resources, especially the incorporation of MT into CAT tools, has had a notable effect on translators’ professional roles. The convergence of technology has changed their task from creating content (i.e. ‘translation from scratch’) to selecting the best option out of a number of suggestions from different sources. Depending on the tool, suggestions might be generated as the translators work, creating an unprecedented amount of information on their screens at any moment. Good ergonomic design, including the organization and operation of user interfaces as well as the number and complexity of functionalities, leaves enough cognitive space for translators to exercise their agency and make the best choices to meet the needs of their clients and target audiences.
TALK 2
MT + CAT tools… lived happily ever after. Or maybe not?
Sara Grizzo
Translator, post-editor and training instructor at Sprachschneiderei
MT is surely an impressive technology, but are CAT tools keeping up with the latest developments? Do they really help translators to fully leverage the advantages of MT (and technology in general) or is there room for improvement?
TALK 3
No risk, no fun... - NMT meets Translation Classics
Christian Weih-Sum
Member of Management Board at Across Systems GmbH
Neural MT is changing things rapidly and fast, with high adoption rates across all industries. How does it relate to classical technologies such as CAT and TMS, and is that really important? In hypes, the pitfalls are often overlooked. And where will this all lead to? Some thoughts on all that.
