LARuby November Meetup

Details

The November meetup will be at MySpace's Beverly Hills office.

UPDATE you do not have RSVP to get in, but we still need an accurate count of people coming, so please try to be accurate in your "yes" or "maybe" RSVP's. HOWEVER, you do have to tell security that you're here for the LARuby Meetup, and show them a photo ID, or they won't let you in.

PARKING INSTRUCTIONS When you turn onto Maple Drive, you will see the Myspace building, it will be on the southside of the street. Turn into the driveway and you will see the parking garage/security booth to the right. That's where the attendees need to show their ID and say they are here for the LA Ruby Meetup.

If you have a great idea that you'd like us to have a presentation on - please let us know and we'll see what we can do to make it happen. Just use the IDEAS (https://www.meetup.com/laruby/ideas) tool here in the site.

MySpace will also be providing food for this month's meetup.

Approximate Schedule:

7:00-7:15 Open / Networking
7:15-7:30 Introductions
7:30-9:30 Presentations (25 minute presentation + 5 minute Q&A)
9:30-10:00 Open / Networking

Here are the speakers for this month:

Scott Gonyea on Riak, MapReduce, and Search

September's Riak presentation (Yakriak) gets revisited. Yakriak is pure js and html, served directly from riak. A similar rails implementation, YakRails, will be demonstrated. The javascript, including MapReduce, is written in CoffeeScript. YakRails also demonstrates UJS in Rails 3, Haml, Sass. Riak Search will be added to the original Yakriak interface.

Scott Gonyea is an LA Ruby regular who didn't submit a bio.

Darren Rush on NoCMS - Invisible Content Management

Content management systems fail developers by requiring undesirable dependencies, mixing presentation and content concerns and adding obtrusive UI where it’s not needed. NoCMS is borne of the belief that any well designed CMS should be invisible to the user. This talk demonstrates the NoCMS cloud service, jQuery library and Ruby gem that can be used in your projects today.

Darren Rush is the CTO of Breitbart an LA-based news and media network and a founder of SOLR cloud-hosting provider PowCloud. He is on the Board of Students4Startups - an initiative to facilitate increased university engagement with the Los Angeles startup community via active internship programs. Previously, he was the founder and CEO of Koders.com, the leading search engine for open source projects which was acquired by Black Duck Software in 2008. You can find him online here: Twitter (https://twitter.com/darrenrush) | Blog (https://darrenrush.com/) | LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/darrenrush)

Tomas Becklin on Ruby at MySpace

There are a couple of products at Myspace that are built using Ruby (Rails). The goal of this presentation is to give some insight into the architecture of these products.

Tomas is an Open Source Platform Architect at Myspace. Prior to Myspace he was the CTO of a News Corp incubator called Slingshot Labs.
