Mesilla Valley Bosque Trail Walk

Length: 1.6 to 2.05 miles
Elevation gain: 9 feet
Level: Beginner/Easy

More of a "walk" than "hike," a stroll around the mostly-level trails at Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park is a great opportunity to socialize. Birdwatchers should bring their binoculars to see the resident Gambel's Quail, Red-winged Blackbirds, three species of swallows, and assorted other nesting waterfowl and songbirds.

Walkers can opt for the shorter Resaca Trail near the river/wetland, or tack on the forested Upland Trail for a longer walk and to get different views of the park's flora and fauna.

We will depart from the visitor center area promptly at 8:00 a.m. Unless you have an annual state parks pass, there is a $5 per vehicle day use fee. We recommend you buy your pass online, in advance, as the park kiosk can be temperamental and the park office is irregularly staffed. Buy passes here:

Here are the usual things to keep in mind:

• Stay on the trail, don't walk off the trail
• Protect yourself from the sun with sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat
• Take breaks often
• Know your limits and how you're feeling
• Bring ample water and a snack, if you need/want one

Follow Leave No Trace principles

• Don't litter
• Pack out trash, recyclables, and food waste
• Leave the area as you found it
