First ever Jane Austen Book Club Meeting!
Since this is the first meeting we will start with introducing ourselves and share our favorite Austen and non-Austen books along with maybe a fun fact about yourself if you feel like sharing. Then we will have a round table-type discussion for those who have read Sense & Sensibility before and those who are brand new to the fabulous Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. I will have some prompts to get us started but I hope to keep things fairly informal.

LisaAbout the Book:
Sense and Sensibility was written in 1795 under the title Elinor and Marianne, when Austen was twenty years old. She revised the novel in 1797 and changed the title to Sense and Sensibility. It was Austen’s literary debut but published anonymously as “by a Lady” in October 1811. For more info about the book check out the Jane Austen Society of North America’s webpage.'The more I know of the world, the more am I convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!'
Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

Join us for a lively book club discussion about Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. We will start with introductions for any newcomers and dive into the discussion. For anyone joining us for the first time, expect a casual, round table style discussion. I will have some prompts to get us started but I hope to keep things fairly informal.

LisaAbout the Book:
Pride and Prejudice was written in 1796-1797 under the title First Impressions. Encouraged by the publication of her first novel Sense and Sensibility, she significantly revised the manuscript in 1811-1812. Due to another novel published in 1800 as First Impressions, she changed the title to Pride and Prejudice. The book was published in 1813 to favorable reviews and sold out in less than a year. For more info about the book, check out the Jane Austen Society of North America’s webpage.‘There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of merit or sense.’
Love is in the air when five sisters discover that a wealthy and eligible bachelor is suddenly within reach. But it is his friend, the haughty Mr. Darcy, who becomes smitten. Unfortunately for him, the object of his affection is not so easily swayed.
One of the most popular characters in English literature, Elizabeth Bennet is intelligent, witty, well-spoken and ahead of her time. If the terrible rumors about Mr. Darcy are true, he doesn’t stand a chance. Yet not all gossip is to be believed when marriage, money, and reputations are on the line. Will Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy circumvent her haste, his ego, and society’s expectations to find love?
