Brrrrr 7,000 ft - Picnic, Hike, Yak, Fish at Lassen County's Little Crater Lake

Details

Cool off from the predicted Heat Wave! We will drive off Hwy 44 near the Bogard Rest Area and N up the volcano on a gravel USFS road to the Little Crater Lake campground and picnic area where we will gather at 11 a.m. Nothing structured planned. Bring what you need for a picnic lunch. Gas stoves should be OK. Limited picnic tables, so camp chairs and/or folding table might be handy. If you have a kayak, you can launch it for a scenic paddle around the crater. There is an easy trail for hiking that starts at the picnic area, ascends the rim, and goes through Aspens to a vista point on the far end of the small lake.

Lassen County's own Crater Lake is accessed by a well graded gravel road that runs N and starts just East of the Bogard Visitor Center (Hwy Rest Stop) off Hwy 44, about 29 mi W of Susanville, about 84 mi E of Redding. The 7 mile gravel road runs N from Hwy 44 and ascends the volcano and ends at the pleasant USFS picnic area and campground on the lakeshore. Elevation is about 7,000 ft, which makes for cooler temps.

The lake generally has good fishing for rainbow trout for those so inclined. Some may wish to camp the night before or after at the lake campground or nearby dispersed camping.
